J. K. Rowling reveals The Harry Potter Alliance is Gay
(April 1, 2019) She may be taking time off Twitter, but Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is still getting people talking after a recent interview where Rowling revealed that beloved non-profit, The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA), is gay.
“Since their launch thirteen years ago, I’ve always thought of The Harry Potter Alliance as profoundly, extraordinarily gay,” Rowling told reporters. “I mean, have you seen their campaigns?”
The HPA is an international non-profit that uses stories, training, and campaigns to help fans become real-life heroes. The organization, which has campaigned for marriage equality, transgender rights, and wider support and acceptance of LGBTQIA+ people, is delighted about the reveal.
“We are absolutely thrilled to learn that we are the Wizarding World’s first openly gay nonprofit,” HPA Executive Director Matt Maggiacomo commented. “We’re outspoken about accepting people for who they are, we spend a lot of time nurturing and supporting new activists just finding their way, and we used to write our own Wolfstar fanfic. Honestly, it just all makes sense now.”
“The HPA is grounded in a very queer and loving community of fan activists,” said HPA Campaigns Director Katie Bowers. “Seriously, even before this reveal, like 40% of our Chapter Organizers and over half of our staff identified as LGBTQIA+. Hopefully, soon it will be 100%!”
“The thing that really brought us all together,” Bowers continued, “was books. That’s why we’re so thrilled to reveal that our next campaign is Accio Books!”
Since the first Accio Books campaign in 2009, the HPA has donated nearly 400,000 books to communities in need around the world. Now, in the 10th year of the campaign, the HPA has partnered with Reading is Fundamental to send books to schools in New York, Chicago, and California, as well as supporting an expected 70 local literacy programs around the world!
Fans wishing to support the now-gay nonprofit’s 10th annual literacy campaign can make donations or start their own fundraisers at acciobooks.org. Donors will not only get the uniquely homosexual benefit of feeling good after supporting a great cause, but they’ll also have a chance to earn magical perks, like an Accio Books poster, Hogwarts resistance tee, and anti-Wormtail Marauders pin set! Fans can also help promote the campaign by joining the HPA on Twitter and Instagram for a series of reading sprints on April 5th at 9:00 pm ET and April 13th at 4:00pm ET.
For fans who prefer a little competition, the HPA offers the Heroine House Cup, where fans can donate to support their favorite Head of House. The winning house will get access to a livestream Q & A with some of the HPA’s favorite women creators, including Kristina Horner, Steph Anderson, and more!
